it’s the 20th anniversary of sailor moon this week. this work of art, in all its forms, has left an imprint on me more than probably anything else i’ve ever come into contact with. it helped shape me. thank you, naoko takeuchi.

so, my husband and i like to play “gambling for delicious new candies” at the japanese grocery store… we often find ourselves barely reading the english discriptions, mostly just grabbing at ones that clearly show recognizable images of treats or have packaging designs that are pleasing to the eye. i’d like to do more reviews in the future, especially of some japanese candies that i’ve really enjoyed in the past… but for now, enjoy these lottery picks.
(in order from left to right as pictured):
kasugai musk melon candy: sweet but not too sweet, and tastes a little like a mix of cantelope and honeydew. its color is pleasing to my eye, reminds me of sea glass. it feels solid and doesn’t seem to develop sharp edges while enjoying, which i am not a fan of with some hard candies. *****
kasugai omaccha miruku (green tea milk) candy: these are like heaven. but let me first talk about packaging. these have the cutest packaging, i liked the melon one also but this one gave me that warm happy nostalgia feeling when i first saw them. now to flavor. these taste just like green tea ice cream, which is just one of the most amazing foods in the world to me. for being a hard candy, these taste creamy and have a smooth velvety texture which is so pleasing. this is a gourmet quality hard candy. *****
kasugai brown sugar candy: this tastes like a candy that i’ve had before, but i can’t place it… the flavor is similar to caramel or toffee, but there’s definitely something different to it. maybe a hint of licorice? it even almost tastes a bit like a burnt marshmallow. man, do i love burnt marshmallows. it ended up feeling sharp in my mouth near the end, but i remedied that with crunching it to bits. ****
(this last package was a mix of 2 flavors)
kanro sugar free coffee candy - cappuccino: not the best coffee candy i’ve ever had, but it’s not horrible… not really screaming cappuccino to me either, though. maybe more like a cup of joe with too much cream and sugar. **
kanro sugar free coffee candy - espresso: first impression when placing it on my tongue: whoa! so bitter!! can’t say i like this one as much either… but it’s better than the cappuccino flavor at least. both of these candies have mouth feel of an old fashioned butterscotch candy to me. don’t get me wrong, these are tasty little treats and would trump a butterscotch for me any day, but i’ve had better coffee candies. i wouldn’t go out of my way to have these. again, some sharpness with these too as they dissolved. ***
(footnote: we did not notice that this candy was sugar free upon purchasing them… my fault, because i can read katakana and it clearly says so on the front, oops. the way these tasted makes a lot more sense to me now!)
(another footnote: i tried looking this brand up online and it seems to be discontinued… hmm.)
you can try these candies and a whole lot more at asian food grocer and on amazon. i love japanese candy!
